Update on Typhoon Phanfone

Typhoon Phanfone is gaining strength and moving further north, eventually affecting Tokyo. The wind speeds of the typhoon has increased somewhat faster than the forecasts indicated earlier this week. Phanfone has a fully developed eye and has convective bands in all quadrants of the circulating clouds. Intensity of the typhoon is 110 knots.  

Typhoon Phanfone is gaining strength and moving further north, eventually affecting Tokyo. The wind speeds of the typhoon has increased somewhat faster than the forecasts indicated earlier this week. Phanfone has a fully developed eye and has convective bands in all quadrants of the circulating clouds. Intensity of the typhoon is 110 knots.

This makes Phanfone a category-3 typhoon. It is predicted to reach a maximum of 120 knots, but as it moves further north over colder water it will loose some strength. Phanfone will continue move in a NW direction, but will during saturday veer towards NE and eventually move closer to Japan.

Phanfone is predicted to be a category-2 typhoon when approaching Japanese waters early sunday 5:th of october and a category-1 typhoon on Monday when the centre of the typhoon is SE of Japan.

Phanfone will merge with an approaching midlatitude trough over Japan. The highest wind speeds will decrease as discussed above, but the over-all area covered with gale and storm force winds will expand. The centre of Phanfone will be off-shore, however the typhoon will bring torrential rain and intense winds to southern Japan affecting Tokyo as well as other large cities primarily along the southern coast.
